Food is generally any edible item that will regenerate Hit Points and Mana Points for a specific time.
Regular food will only get you up to "100% full", or 20 minutes, if you try to eat food that would take you over the threshold you will get a message saying "You are full.".
Some types of food can take you over that limit:
Dragon Ham and Hydra Ham can get you to 40 minutes or 200% full, while Frozen Ham can get you up to 60 minutes or 300% full,
for this reason these types of food are often saved for Bedmages.
When hunting, it is important for the food you bring with you to have a good weight-regeneration ratio,
a popular choice is Brown Mushrooms which can be bought from the shop,
other possibilities include Fire Mushrooms and even Orange Mushrooms, both obtainable through Farming.
You might also want to have a look at money spent per food.
Foods such as Eggs, Cucumbers, Fire Mushrooms, Oranges and others are common ingredients in Cooking.
There are also many species of fish and many cookable meals to be discovered on Medivia;
for more information on those, take a look at Cooking and Fishing.
